Songs you'd like GOY to cover

So many good ones to choose from already! ‘Blood’ was my favourite song of last year (yes, even more than the GFIL album - and I adore that album!). It feels like an eternity ago, but they released a version of ‘Straight to You’ by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds earlier this year that I love.

During the North American support tour for the Foo Fighters back in October they opened the show with part of ‘Bastards of Young’ by The Replacements before segueing into ‘Fear and Trembling’ - I’d love to see them release a full version of that.

Other songs I’d love to see get the Gang of Youths treatment: ‘We 3’ by Soul Asylum, ‘Without You’ by Silverchair, ‘Harpoon’ by Jebediah.

During one of the Sydney shows I saw last week, Dave on solo piano went from ‘Persevere’ into ‘A Case of You’ by Joni Mitchell. He’s also Springsteen’s ‘I’m On Fire’ on certain tour dates as well.

Whether he’s singing his own words or other peoples, I could listen to him all day!

“All the young dudes” from David Bowie. Seems to fit the bands style, some kind of scat lyric into a nice chorus.

Looks like they did Bloodbuzz Ohio by the National last night. Can’t wait to see them in DC on Monday.

I would’ve loved a full band version, but I’ll take that happily.

Have fun Monday, Tim! Any chance you’ll be doing pics/videos?

I’ll take some pictures but I’m not much of a video guy. I like to experience the moment. I’ll do my best to give you a review after the show!

Enjoy the show, Tim - we’re living vicariously through you on Monday.

Since playing ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’ Dave has opened solo with covers, playing ‘Ahead By A Century’ in Toronto and ‘Streets Of Philadelphia’ in Philly. There are plenty of New York themed songs for him to choose from, so I’m looking forward to his choice at the NY gig.

It’s cool that they’re doing that to open the shows.

OMG, I’d love for them to cover “In Your Eyes.”

Parting Ways from the 2000’s Pearl Jam album BINAURAL.

This is a quiet one, but I’d love to hear GOY do Collective Soul’s “Adored.”

We heard them play Springsteens Born to run in the soundcheck in Amsterdam. It was great! Hope they play it at a show sometimes.

Dave’s such a Springsteen fan, I wonder if they ever did cover it in the early days. I don’t recall coming across it when I was doing the Tours section of the website, but there are a lot of early shows when the setlist is totally unknown. I wonder if @SolopsismBaby has any idea if they ever did it??

I have another one. “Gentle On My Mind” is one of my favorite songs – I think Dave would do a really beautiful interpretation of the lyrics. This is a great verse from it:

I still might run in silence, tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me 'til I’m blind
But not to where I cannot see you walkin’ on the backroads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind

Full lyrics:

It’s originally an old-school country song by John Hartford. He and Glen Campbell both won Grammys for it in 1968. Campbell’s version is sublime:

It’s been covered a ton over the years – by country artists like The Band Perry and Alison Krauss, by Aretha Franklin, Luka Bloom and many more. Maybe the Elvis Presley version is the one most like what GOY might do with it?

Anyway, I’m formally adding this one to the list of songs I’d love GOY to cover.

@matt I hadn’t seen this comment from you. I have told @Swan269 that I could easily see Gang of Youths do the Jeffrey Gaines version of “In Your Eyes”!

“Everybody Hurts” by REM. Right up Dave’s alley lyrically, and they’d rock it up a bit, too, I bet.

I originally had this one on my possible list. As I have heard it a number of times lately, I am drawn to a GOY cover of “Lost Boy” by Ruth B.

Dave could play the piano and easily immerse us into telling this story! What do you guys think?

anything they do is great but I’d love to hear their version of this songs:

  • The Wolf by Mumford And Sons
  • Byegone by Volcano Choir
  • With a Little Help From My Friends

Now that you mention it, I’m kinda surprised they’ve never covered “With a Little Help…” – seems right up their alley.

And welcome to the forum, @gianlucafierro!

@DoubleG yes, totally :muscle:
